Visit the iconic Watamu lighthouse and its surroundings - a local favourite offering sweeping coastal views, birdwatching, and a true taste of authentic Kenyan coastal life.
Visit the iconic Watamu Lighthouse - known locally as "Lichthaus" from the German word used by early European settlers. Perched on a rocky headland overlooking the Indian Ocean, the lighthouse offers breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline, the marine national park below, and - on clear mornings - all the way to the Arabuko-Sokoke forest canopy inland.
Walk the rocky coastal path below the lighthouse where rock hyraxes sun themselves on the boulders and over 40 species of coastal birds can be spotted - from pied kingfishers and fish eagles to the rare Roseate Tern. Nashon, a keen naturalist, knows every bird call and will help you identify species. The tide pools below are teeming with crabs, sea anemones, and small reef fish.
This half-day tour finishes with a walk through the authentic heart of Watamu village - past the fish landing jetty, the morning market, local tea houses, and the colourful fishing boats. This is the real Kenya that most tourists never see - and Nashon, born and raised here, is the perfect guide to experience it.
